We’ve decided my sons first deer rifle will be in 350 legend due to state law.
Now the hard part, bolt action or AR platform. Wife wants to go bolt action for him but I’m leaning AR 15. He’s doing well shooting right handed guns so that’s no longer an issue. We have 2 AR platforms already ( MP 22 and a Saint ) so keeping with the familiar makes sense to me but we all love a good bolt action. Seeing this is going to be his to take when he moves out I’m not sure just getting an upper is the way to go. Anyone here use 350 legend in either bolt action or AR?

I made a post a while back about the 350 Legend AR I picked up.
It's a nice thumper with recoil no worse than a .223. Ballistics are comparable to the .30-30. The upper I picked up is from Bear Creek Arsenal. They have a lot of different options. You can get 5, 10, and 20 round mags for it and can modify P-mags to load 28 rounds. As long as you teach your son trigger control, it shouldn't matter if he has a bolt or semi-auto. I would make sure he can shoot with iron sights before adding optics into the mix, though.

The more I think about it the more I wanting to go the upper route. It’s cheaper and if he ends up liking it I can always buy him a dedicated rifle later or he can get one himself. I’ve never messed with with switching uppers before but it looks simple enough as long as you get a complete one. Thought about getting one in .308 just to have as well even though I can’t hunt with it. |

I see .350 Legend for sale just about everywhere too,,.444 not so much.
I like bolt actions more myself but if he is more familiar with AR platforms I say go AR platform

I think a good way to approach this is to ask, what will a bolt action give you over a semi-auto?
Typically a bolt action will be more accurate, but is the 350 Legend really a round where you're going to see the difference? Bolt guns can also handle higher pressures, but again, the 350 Legend isn't exactly pushing the envelope. I can't really find a good justification for the bolt action here. Price might be a consideration, with it being cheaper to start out with the bolt gun. In the long run, with the ease of swapping uppers, an auto platform gives you 1 gun and multiple cartridge choices. |
