45-70 Government
Anyone use a gun chambered in this? I honestly don’t know much about it, not even sure if it’s legal to hunt with in Ohio but I might be able to get one ( single shot Henry ) for a decent price. How’s the recoil, good for whitetail, etc.

Recoil depends on the loading. First time I shot one, it was my brother-in-law's with his reloads he was scared to test himself - but he didn't let me know that. It liked to have dislocated my shoulder. Typical loadings aren't that bad, though. You can even load them with black powder, as that is what the cartridge was originally designed for - 45 caliber and 70 gr. of black powder, thus 45-70.
Everyone I know who owns a rifle chambered for it, loves it. But, everyone I know who owns one also casts their own bullets and loads their own rounds, as ammo and even the bullets can get pretty pricey. If you want a good, lightweight straight wall deer cartridge for Ohio, look at the 350 Legend. If you have an AR-15, you can buy a barreled upper and a mag and be in business for around $300.

We have an SA Saint, not looked into getting a upper for it yet. But dam something about a 45-70 lever gun is calling to me as well. |

The 350 Legend's recoil is similar to that of a 5.56, which makes sense because it is basically a 5.56 case necked up to .355 (or 9mm). |

On my way out, I stopped and talked to the store owner and asked him if that's how he ran his business, because I was taking my money elsewhere and showed the big wad of cash. The gun store went out of business not long afterwards. I doubt it was my non-purchase alone that did it, but they had a bad reputation and in a small town, it was a death sentence for any business. |

I have a JM Marlin lever in 45-70. A couple of mates have them also. You can load them light or very heavy. They are a lot of fun. I cast my own pills & reload.

I like my right shoulder. I've shot one, twice. Won't shoot it again.
There's other, less 'abusive' chambered rifles to use. |

Since the cartridge will chamber in some old black powder weapons, most factory ammo falls well short of the potential for that round. You can hand load it up to where it rivals some of the big bore stuff used in Africa.
For deer, I would say it's overkill, but I don't imagine you'd have to track the animal very far after shooting it. |

I'm not a fan of recoil but always thought the 45-70 was a sweet looking rifle.
My neighbor just bought a 338 Lapua and his ammo runs from $5 to $9 a round |

Just dawned on me. So now I feel dumb.
My son is left handed and me and my wife shoot right. I can get a single shot of one of the straight walls for under $400 except 45-70. Now I got to rethink everything again lol. |

Wow! The H&R 1871 Buffalo rifle was around $300 until recently. Just did a search, and they are sitting at just under $500. Inflation's a bitch.

I have several 1880s Trapdoor Springfield rifles in 45/70. I enjoy shooting them. I only shoot "Cowboy" loads out of them.

I had a Marlin 1895, but traded it in on a Ruger
#3. I also have a Handi-Rifle and a Siamese Mauser in .45-70 that I built for my dad. I killed my first deer with the Marlin when I was 16. Kicks like a mule.
