The Vortex Crossfire II I recently put on the Ruger PC carbine says it has a battery life of 50k hours, too. So, I pulled out the calculator and did the math - it is right around 5 years, if you forget to shut it off.

I haven't replaced the batteries in my old Tasco, since I got it, and that's been well over 10 years ago. I pulled it out the other day and turned it on, and was surprised it was still strong.
