Cabela's has a sale on the Ruger SR22
The stars lined up just right this payday and I got the new sales flyer for Cabela's /Bass Pro Shops with the Ruger SR22 for $320. That comes out cheaper than Gallery of Guns distributors around here, which average anywhere from $340-$380 for the same model.
So, I went down and bought the last one the Albuquerque store had in stock, this afternoon. The sales guy informed me I had $36 in Cabela's bucks and asked if I wanted to use it. Sure! That basically covered the tax. I'm just reading the manual - trying to figure out how to swap grips on it. Wouldn't have minded getting the threaded barrel version, but I reckon Ruger would sell me a barrel if I wanted one. I've been wanting one of these since they first came out. If I don't like it, I can sell it for a profit pretty easily. Cabela's is normally the last place I would buy a firearm. They are usually priced around MSRP and nobody pays MSRP. But if you watch their sales and get in early, you can get some good deals. At least they didn't escort me out of the store after the sale like Walmart does - as if you are somehow going to explode and shoot up the place that just sold you the gun.

I have one....i bought it because it was similar to a walther p22 but not made out of pot metal which i understand caused slides to crack on the walther.
I bought it right before the 22 ammo shortage happened..so i haven't put many rounds through it...the last time i used it i popped a diamondback in the head with it in my side yard. its a nice gun to carry.....very light and compact.

I took it out this morning in the wind and blowing snow for a 200 round function test after cleaning and lubricating it with Slide Glide lite. With the wind at 30-50 mph, there was no setting up any kind of paper target. I was just shooting at cans - tin, not afri- or mexi today. First thing I noticed was the trigger pull. The first double-action pull is pretty long and stiff. The single action trigger pull is nice and light. Ammo was 100 rounds of CCI Blazer 40 gr. solids and 100 rounds of CCI Mini Mag 40 gr. solids. I had an FTF on the 8th round of the second 10 rd. mag with the Blazers, and that was the only stoppage I had at all. Accuracy was as good as I could shoot. It was dead-on at 25 yards, shooting a snow and ice-crusted juniper stump. I could see where my bullets were hitting in the snow. At 50 yards, it was kind of all over the place. Could have been the wind, could have been the distance with the 3.5" bbl, but it looked like I was shooting a shotgun into the snow on the side of the hill. I shot 1-handed with right and left hand; two handed grip; slow fire; rapid fire, and the pistol never hiccuped after that one FTF. I use a high grip, and have a big paw, so I got some mild hammer bite. It would be nice if it had a little more of a beaver tail, but after I adjusted my grip slightly, the hammer bite went away. Big problem: it only came with two magazines. I don't like having to reload after two mags. What will be the purpose of this pistol? Self defense? Target shooting? I'm not particularly a fan of .22 LR as a self defense round. Even out hiking, I'll pack something in the caliber that starts with a "4" or a "357 mag". This pistol is for fun, and it is fun to shoot. If I want accuracy, the 22/45 with the red dot will come out. My 200 round test stopped at 180. My nose was cold and I also have a rule to not shoot myself dry. That rule was affirmed when I lived in Tucson and was out shooting in the desert on South Wilmot, south of the prisons. When I packed up and was heading out, there was a carload of gangbangers at the end of the track waiting for me to come out. I have no doubts as to what their intentions were. They were persuaded to go somewhere else. |

Up to 420 rounds through the Ruger with no malfunctions that cannot be blamed on ammo.
I got 4 more brand new Ruger factory mags for it on Ebay, and will get another 4 so I'll have 10 and can load up 100 rounds at a time. Shooting at a rock on the side of a hill at ~150 yards, I was hitting almost right on without much holdover. I was surprised at that due to the 3.5" bbl on the pistol combined with the .22LR High Velocity Remington Thunderbolts. Ammo problems were: Aguila Pistol Match 40 gr. - fail to cycle the slide far enough back to pick up the next round in the mag. Cheap ass Mexican ammo that even smells like Mexico. I just wanted to get what I thought might be the crappiest ammo to see if the pistol would digest it. Remington Thunderbolts - odd that in the same mag I had three rounds that took 2 strikes to ignite. Nice thing about the double-action is I just had to pull the trigger a second time and the round went off. This was toward the end of my shooting session and I haven't cleaned the pistol yet, so I am wondering if the firing pin channel might be gunked up? But I put 2 more mags through it after that one with no problems. |

Rear sight fell off today. Looks like it lost a spring that helps hold it in. I'll be calling Ruger in the morning.

My boy was up from Florida and brought his. It is his "self defense" gun (laugh). Right before he left I slipped out and "traded" my sr9c with 3 17 round mags. I really like the little thing.

Called the number in my owner's manual and it went to the Ruger North Carolina factory. I got to talk to what sounded like a Southern Belle on the phone.
She sent me a spring and a screw at no charge and told me to make sure I tighten down the elevation screw on the rear sight, as they've had some that were not tightened down and folks have had the same problem I had. Got them in the mail a few days later, put them on and the SR22 is good to go again. |

Shot it a little more today.
CCI Quiet - not recommended for this pistol. Too many foul ups from failure to feed the next round (not enough power to cycle the slide completely) to failure to eject to stovepipes. Since it is a reduced power loading, I pretty much expected that performance, or lack thereof. CCI Stingers - Holy snap, Batman! These really get the little .22 going. Made it almost feel like a 9mm. Accuracy was minute-of-soupcan for both variations. Mainly because I was just shooting a can again, and not trying to keep any kind of group. In fact, I aim slightly below the can because I like to make it jump up and chase it across the clearing I was shooting in. I hadn't shot the GP100 in .357 Mag for a while. I was able to put a few cylinders through that, too. One of the loadings I had was some Federal 158 gr. semi-jacketed wadcutters. I took these away from my mom after some dumb bastard in a gun store near her sold them to her for her Taurus 605 snub-nose .357 mag. I traded her some 110 gr. Hornady XTP that I loaded to .38 Special +P velocities. Much easier shooting in her pistol compared to those monster 158 gr. hot loads. I could box someone's ears for selling an old lady that kind of ammo as a self defense round. |
