Crappies season starting...
Neighbor, elderly lady, is up a 5 a.m. weekends and on her way out fishing..
Cooler night weather has them on the move.. Great eating fish, fair fight with ultra-light tackle.. You have to find the correct depth. A foot or two off they wont hit.. Anyone "Speckled Perch" crappie fish? They run 2 to a bit over 3 pounds down here..

I like Crappie to eat if they are caught in cold water. In warmer water they grow too fast and the meat isn't as firm and taste somewhat different - more like bass.
Takes skill to land big ones. They have soft mouths and if you try to horse them in, you'll rip the hook right out of their mouth.

I used to looooove crappie fishing when I was a little kid. Me and my grandpa would go from time to time, when everything was just right. We could go and catch a whole cooler of them in an evening, then bring 'em back to clean them. Some of the best fried fish I've ever eaten was the crappie caught out of Lake Fork. Good eatin' !

We have 'em in the Snake River.
Two/Three pounders, some a bit larger. I've allways referred to them as a Perch too. |

People here take their boats 10+ miles down too lake Woodruff and Dexter..
Myself and another old timer wait till they all leave.. Fish right where they pulled their boats out from.. The fish were sitting right under their boats.. Yes Pogo. Not soft mouths per say but very thin. Key is a super sharp hook.. Puts a small hole in their mouth.. No set on the hook, just gentle pull. Yes they love cold water.. They stay deep till our river and lake water cools.. Good fun fishin.. Yall come on down, the boat is gassed and finally runnin.. |

The Snake is 1,078 miles long.
Mississippi is 2,320 miles long. Snake is a very diverse river. Down here it is quite calm. The dams decide how much water flows on it too. I just hope those jumping carp never infect it. |
