Single shot rifles are great for learning as you have to make every shot count. You can't miss fast enough to win.

Air guns are good for cheap practice & developing good technique. Plus you arent going to kill anyone if you do something retarded.

As a kid I would shoot off a couple of hundred every day after school.

The oldest son has the Bicentennial single six. The ex has the 2 3/4"ss speed six. Tried to buy it back. No go.
