46 years hunting squirrels......
In 1965 my buddy and I camped out for opening day squirrels.
We have NEVER missed an opening day since. This August will make 46 years and probably some kinda record. He and I don't hunt anymore and leave that up to the young'ns nowadays. Lots of shootin', campin' and beer drinkin' after the morning hunt. In Kentucky.

Sounds like you've kept the best parts of your tradition alive, Mitch.
Here's hoping you have a great season this fall. By the way, did you guys use shotguns or .22s? Not sure there even is a season in Texas as peeps I know just shoot their asses year round. |

Used to hunt squirrel (and other small varmints) with gallery ammo.
Lower velocity and the bullet powdered out upon striking anything. 'Course for squirrels it HAD to be a head shot, allways. In the Northwest, coastal regions, many years ago, I had a hunting partner that fetched 'em back as well as any bird dog would. Even if they landed right at my feet. He also received all the dinner table scraps. |

I used to have a doctor who hated squirrels with passion and considered it his real mission in life to eradicate them. He used 22LR. One day I took him a box of Remington's hyper-velocity "Vipers." He almost wept with joy!

My uncle has informed me that a .17 HMR is not an appropriate squirrel round, if you want any meat to eat.

I used .22 shorts when I hunted squirrels with my dad. He wanted a shoulder shot on them because he ate the brains.
