Russia To Replace Aging Makarov Pistol
I can't believe it's taken this long for the Russians to get around to replacing their dog of a military pistol. It's always been too clunky and heavy for the anemic round it fires, 9MM Makarov, which is ballistically similar to .380 ACP.
https://www.rt.com/russia/448153-rus...stol-udav-boa/ They would have been better off keeping the 7.62 Tokarev imo in inventory in the first place. More compact and fires the hard-hitting bottleneck 7.62 cartridge. I guess the main advantage of this Udav new pistol is it's hi-cap magazine. |

First pistol I ever bought was a Russian (Baikal) Makarov with those awful adjustable
sights. Later had three or four E. German made pistols with fixed sights - very well made and finished. Reliable, fun to shoot, but not much of a defensive round IMO. Some minor regrets at letting 'em go one buy one, but am much happier with U.S. made pistols with a larger hole in the barrel.

I had one of those Baikal Russki Maks as well. It was pretty well made and reasonably accurate but too heavy for the light round it fires. I sold it several years ago and replaced it with a Yugo-made Tokarev. A much better CCW pistol with a harder hitting round imo.
And yes, the USA makes some very fine handguns, both autos & revolvers. |

When I shoot my Tok at indoor ranges some people think it's a .357 Mag being set off. Very large muzzle flash & report. The military Eastbloc ammo was loaded HOT for that little bullet. Lately I've been running Romanian surplus ammo through it...BANG! every time.

A friend had one and in his yard we put a few rounds into an old door that was sitting about with his Tokarev. Pretty impressive it blew the whole center of the door out so as you could just about walk through it.

If you want to reduce the BOOM and recoil a little bit then shoot some 7.63x25 Mauser ammo in your Tok. The metallurgy of the broomhandle Mausers was a bit weak, so they loaded the ammo lighter. It's about 300 FPS slower than typical Tok ammo, yet still cycles fine in my Romy.
Of course the compensator I got helps, too. https://gunpartswarehouse.com/pistol...7-62x25mm.html |

I read on an ammo website that the 7.62 Tok was the highest velocity pistol cartridge available until the .357 Magnum came out. So, peoples comparison to the Mag round are understandable. |

High velocity enough to penetrate many body armors on the market even today.

I've never owned a Mac, but I have a Tok. I like the Tok but for the trigger. Really a heavy stiff trigger on mine. Powerful pistol cartridge that was designed for the pps 41 subgun.
