IIRC FN has been building M-16 in North Carolina since the early 80's. Not hard to figure out that Colt's & Remington both being in Union controlled areas cannot build them as cheap as FN.

Follow the money $$$$$$$$$$$
Follow the money $$$$$$$$$. With Vietnam expanding the U.S. Military needed, or wanted, a new weapon for close quarters combat in the jungles. This to keep up with the AK-47.
Enter Colt Hartford Connecticut. 3 or 4 competitors were introduced for testing. Who won according to the Troops doing the testing? Stoners entry hands down won, not even a close second were the others. What to do to sell your weapons that was failing the tests? Simple, start mass production, get the political scum in your pocket $$ and they will take them. I was in Connecticut following this crap, then issued one by the Govt. Was my M-16 o.k.? Yes, was the Stoner better? Yes. Follow the money. ADD: Special Ops Troops almost exclusively used the Stoners. Look at picts of the times and you will see either Stoners or AKs their holding. Stoner took out the M-16s faults and created and improved good working design weapon.
