Question for you expert cooks: Saving half a onion
If you cut a onion in half and only need to use half, Is it bad to save the other half in the frig for a day or two till you need it?
I remember a wives tale that cut onions absorb germs and crap

I put it in a ziplock baggie, then in a plastic container -- more to contain the odor than anything else. It should be good for a week, but they never last that long in my house.

I do most of the grocery shopping. When I buy onions I hand pick different sizes, mostly small onions that I/we will use all of it in a meal so we don't need to store any in the fridge.
It costs less to buy a bag of onions but I like to choose the sizes that I want so they cost a little more. Also we won't use a three pound bag before the onions start turning bad.

Now when you cut an onion for use leave the roots top and bottom attached. Cut around it. I guess it's like leaving the brain and innards attached to survive? Nice Georgia sweet Videha's onions? Put them separated in women's nylon stockings and hang then dry in a nice dry place. I love onions anti oxidant and great on burgers.

I'll put a half onion on a saucer on the counter and it will start to turn black after a day or so. Supposed to draw bacteria or germs or something cleaning the air.
