Woodcutting
Stopped by the Ranger station on the way home, the other day to use their toilet (Ranger stations always have clean toilets). They had wood cutting permits for sale at $10/cord. I got permits for 2 cords of dead and down trees.
Went out today to cut my 2 cords, hauling a 5x10 tandem axle trailer with my 3/4 ton Chevy Silverado. One cord on the trailer is 2 ft. high and 3 ft. high in the pickup bed. Came home with just 1/2 a cord. I forgot how much work woodcutting actually is. Didn't help that I was fighting my dang chainsaw(s), either. When they ran, they ran good. Getting them started was the hard part, or re-started after running them out of gas. I'm beat.

Unless they were overly large rounds, I used to cut them to the width of the pickup, and/or the width of the trailer. Cutting them into splitting rounds, in the woods, didn't make sense if I could just get them home and cut 'em into splitting rounds at my leisure.

I figured if I cut them stove size, all I have to do is stack it. |

Keep a can of WD-40 with yah. Just a very small squirt of that de-greaser in the air intake and hang on.
Not to much, that stuff is explosive as hell and way better than starting fluid for the saw. ADD: Sanders don't use that corn oil garbage fuel in the saw. That crap sits you will be buying a new saw.

Went out again this morning with my new Stihl Farm Boss.
Talk about a serious saw! Holy beavers, Batman! I guess old Paul Bunyan and I got carried away -- Find the saw! I had a cord of wood loaded up in the pickup in 2 hours. That's because I took a break and ate some lunch. Actually, the Forest Service woodcutters are thinning the forest. I am just cutting dead and down stuff. There were a lot of people out there cutting wood today, but nobody was in anyone else's way. Plenty for everyone. |

They must be doing a thinning operation, along with falling the dead stuff.
Dang, you scored real good! |

They are thinning. The local resistance to woodcutting pretty much did a 180 degree turnaround after the devastating fires we had up in this area about 4-5 years ago.
Where the locals were fighting tooth and nail to not allow any thinning, now they are pushing for it. It's amazing how folks will change their minds when a few of their neighbor's houses get burned down. |

Filled the rest of my permit this morning - the last 1/2 cord.
Lots of people up there just getting started with their wood cutting. The Forest Service closes the road on November 1st, so they better get after it if they want to put up enough for the winter. |

Lots of guys selling fire wood around here. I am having 2 cord delivered and stacked in my racks next week. I gotta build a woodshed. I don't like my firewood not under a roof. Tarps ok...but.... Way too decrepit to make the Farm Boss yell...anymore.
