Good Sources for Reloading Supplies
OK, I'll start. Maybe this one could be a Sticky if we fill it with good enough info. That is of course if the Great 5Knives approves.
MidwayUSA is a good place.: http://www.midwayusa.com

a sticky would be great, also if you guys have links to info about reloading like what you need to start out, what you should start on and just general info you should read up on before starting would be awsome. ive always wanted to get into it but have never really found (or looked for) any good links on the basics and all the info id like to know before i went out and started buying stuff to do it.

thank you! I'm working on the material for a sticky or two. But its going slower than I thought it would. I don't know if thats because I old and slow or because my files are a mess and often out of Date. Probably both! Good idea , if anyone would like to recommend a source in their post, we can pull them out and put them on a sticky later. Regards, |

General Information and Manufacturers Links
NOTE: You will never see a specific powder charge listed on this forum. Any posted will be promptly removed. And the poster may be publicly rebuked, chastised and ridiculed!
We're thinking of bringing back the stocks and public flogging! Heres why; There are imbecile who will post very dangerous load data, usually some one notices and pulls the plug in a hurry. The worst problems occur when a known and respected contributor makes a typo or misplaced a decimal point. Big difference between what 3.5 grains of Bullseye does and what 35 grains will do. Liability is one thing and the Forum doesn't need that, but there isn't a person here who would find it easy to live with themselves if the seriously injured someone. As a favor, please do not reply to this thread, start a new one if you would, we'll incorporate your info and suggestion, this just makes it easier to read. Thanks. JUST GETTING STARTED? Getting Started? or just been away from Reloading for a while? Here is a valuable site for those starting out, and a good reminder for anyone who has been away from reloading for a while. The National Reloading Manufacturers Association, Web site has good basic information. Including the following; THE BASIC RULES FOR RELOADING SAFELY: A guide to the measures necessary for safe reloading. INTRODUCTION TO RELOADING: A basic introductory overview of reloading and a synopsis of necessary tools and equipment. And VIRTUAL RELOADING: See the basic steps in reloading in action! Video clips you can download and view illustrating each step in the process. (Test with one clip, you may or may not be able to view them on your computer.) It can all be found at the National Reloading Manufacturers Association web site at: http://www.reload-nrma.com RELOADING MANUALS AND HANDBOOKS These conatin vital information NEEDED by the reloader. They are published by Bullet and Powder manufacturers and contain a selection of safe, tested "recipes". A couple of points about using the load data in any manual. 1. All Manuals are designed to have the user reduce the lowest recommended loading, by 10% and then slowly work up until desired performance is attained. Any rare exceptions will be clearly noted in your manual. 2. Do not mix components, follow the load manual EXACTLY! Why? Because the printed Data is. really only valid for the precise firearm and combination tested. Tighter or looser bores, tighter or looser chambers, variations in headspace, bullet jacket, altitude and temperature, different lots of bullets, powder or primers can cause unforeseen and unpleasant changes. 3. Don't get too worked up over difficulty in duplicating factory published ballistics! Factory published ballistics are usually ... Optimistic! Data for 30-30 usually refers to a 24 or 26 inch barrel, a new tight one! Your 20" carbine won't duplicate the published figures, even with factory loads. Reloading Manuals are Test results, the velocities they publish are actual results with the firearms and barrels they list. They are normally less than the factory published figures. 4. Please do not ever consider using loads above the maximum shown in a current load manual. Doing so WILL put your firearm and the health of the person shooting it at risk. Even bystanders have been injured and killed by overloads. 5. Please keep you loads in safe loading range, "HOT" loads usually give poorer accuracy, shorten the useful life of the firearm, definitely shorten case life and provide unnecessarily heavy recoil. WHAT MANUALS SHOULD I BUY? Personally, I always have the latest Lyman manual on hand, you can see and order it at; LYMAN http://www.lymanproducts.com/lymanproducts/index.htm I really like HODGDON's approach with their new magazine style manual, it's a bargain at the price they charge,IMO. If a fellow had those two, and the manual for his favorite jacketed bullet manufacturor, Hornaday, Nosler, Sierra or Speer, etc. I think he'd be in good shape, with most bases covered. He'd also have the information to get very knowledgable about ballistics and reloadfing, in a hurry! IMO, of course, POWDER MANUFACTURERS Most of the Powder Companies have on-line sites and on-line load data. They give load data away to protect themselves and to sell more powder. Here are a few of the major ones: ACCURATE http://www.accuratepowder.com/ ALLIANT http://www.alliantpowder.com/ HODGDON http://www.hodgdon.com/ IMR POWDER http://www.imrpowder.com/ WINCHESTER NOTE: Winchester has licensed distribution of their powder to Hodgdon, as a result winchester has locked up their PDF on-line reloading manual and as yet, Hodgdon is not showing Winchester load data. For now, at least, it's necessary to go by the printed manuals. (as of 3/29/2006) And for the Black Powder Shooters; GOEX http://www.goexpowder.com/ BULLET MANUFACTURERS Nosler and Speer will post some data usually relating to new bullets in their linup, as do some of the smaller companies. But the Manufaxtirers sites will have useseful information about their bullets. These are the Companies that publish good hard copy Reloading manuals. BARNES BULLETS http://www.barnesbullets.com BERGER BULLETS http://www.bergerbullets.com BEAR TOOTH BULLETS http://www.beartoothbullets.com/ HORNADAY http://www.hornady.com/ MEISTER BULLETS http://www.meisterbullets.com/index.asp NATIONAL BULLET COMPANY http://www.nationalbullet.com/ NOSLER http://www.nosler.com/ OREGON TRAIL BULLET COMPANY Laser Cast & TruShot Bullets http://www.laser-cast.com/ SIERRA http://www.sierrabullets.com/ SPEER http://www.speer-bullets.com/default.asp?s1=5 SWIFT BULLETS http://swiftbulletcompany.com/index2a.html RELOADING TOOLS Everything from simple hand presses for the person only loading a few cartridges a year to some very high volume presses. Talk to experiences Reloaders and ideally watch and/or operate one befoe you buy. Also shop around for used equipment, that can be a good inexpensive way to get started, or upgrade. LEE PRECISION http://www.leeprecision.com/ LYMAN http://www.lymanproducts.com/lymanproducts/index.htm RCBS http://www.rcbs.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=5&s2=13 ........................ .. well,
Great contributions so far, thanks everyone! Least I can do is contribute something Natchez Shooters supply at; http://www.natchezss.com/ I've never dealt with them personally but I know several guys who are very happy repeat customers. Like Midwest, a good source for ammunition also! A while back 35 Remington was real scarce for some reason, but Natchez had it. Regards, Last edited by 5knives; 03-28-2006 at 06:06 PM. |
