Welcome to the site where the owners and members have had it with playing "nice" and being "inclusive" and "tolerant" of points of view that are destroying the fabric of what made this country great. The members here are sick and tired of politicians of all parties lying, deceiving, stealing, and pretending they are doing it all for the good of the country while selling out to special interests who have the set goal of destroying this country. We have had enough of career politicians who use their office only for personal gain, and who refuse to listen to the people who put them in office. The membership is no longer part of the silent majority who play nice and get along while getting screwed by anyone with a loud voice and an agenda. We will no longer allow anyone to piss down our back and tell us it's raining. And we like guns too.

Default Around the world in 10 years

I know EricD has had a similar adventure, albeit not as long or as far, but just as adventurous in Africa, I'm sure.

The link goes to the website of a couple who started out in Barcelona, Spain, and have literally driven around the world (with stops aboard ships to cross oceans).

They've been on the road now for 15 years.

Tips To Overland The World And Return To Tell The Story

Whatever you choose as a self-defense weapon, don’t keep it in a bag or in a place where you cannot access it fast. If you don’t have it at hand, it’s not useful, and it’s better not to carry it.

Hide your money in different places. Looking for an unexpected place? How about inside an empty roll-on deodorant. Nobody steals deodorant.

Different doesn’t mean dangerous. Always be courteous and kind to all the people you meet. Money, education, color of skin, and religion are mere accidents of life.

Don’t follow the safety recommendations of your government to the letter. The world is not as dangerous as they would lead you to believe.

Auxiliary lights, bicycles, jerry cans, and anything at hand is a temptation and a target for people who earn a fraction of the lowest wage in the U.S. Properly lock everything you have, or store it on the roof, out of reach. Or much better, out of sight.

When someone talks badly about a country, ask if they have been there. People usually repeat what they’ve seen on television, and television only shows conflict, war, outrage, corruption, and decay. Good news doesn’t spread as fast as bad news.

Some real good advice there. I'm glad there's YouTube to use to travel.
It is sure as heck a lot cheaper. May not be as tangible, but is good enough for MY interest, most of the time.
I don't like the SMELL of foreign countries, as a rule.

I'm getting itchy feet, if you haven't noticed.

I've come to the conclusion that it's better, with the devil you know, than to make the acquaintance of a different devil.

Generally speaking I think they give some good advice. Most importantly, keep cool when dealing with hostile locals. Also, smiling and pretending to be dumb can get you through a amazing variety of difficult situation.

I'd only heard snippets of your trip, but never seen this map. That's an awesome trip. I'd like to do something like that in South America.

While some of the countries you didn't go into are fairly obvious, it is interesting as to some you went through vs. those you avoided.

Have you written up your experiences anywhere? I know Expedition Portal would be interested in them.

We considered it, but decided the politically correct world probably wasn't ready for what I had to say about the things we saw and experienced in Africa.

Then it will never be written. The world is in the process of big changes.
When the SHTF it will NOT stop, until a couple of 'factions' are completely wiped out.

The decimation will be worse than any of the wars ever fought.
Most of us won't be around, because it will be a very long war,
or it will be total destruction.

Sorry, but I'm not going to be around for the finish.

Sorry for the rant too.

First of all we dropped some countries simply because there is a limit to how much you can cover in a year, while actually seeing and experiencing things vs just passing thru. So you have to prioritize.

Secondly, the security situation is constantly changing in many African countries (although it often isn't as bad as the media makes it out to be), so you have to plan accordingly.

For example; we dropped going into Ivory Coast because the civil war broke out a week before we planned to cross the border from Mali. While on the other hand we dropped Nigeria because we wanted to spend more time in Niger before continuing on into Chad.

Thirdly, the rainy season plays a part too. So we had to make it across northern Africa and down to Kenya before the rainy season would make it impossible to cross from Sudan into Ethiopia and onwards.

Just by chance, we were the last vehicle to cross into Sudan from Chad before the Sudanese closed the border due to the situation in Darfur, which started while we were there. If we'd been a day late, we would have had to turn around and go south thru Cameroon, Gabon, Rep. of Congo, DRC and Angola. Which would not have been a problem at that time.

In fact, when we finally reached Cape Town, I felt that I wasn't quite finished with the trip, and discussed with my wife driving up via Angola, DRC ( with the Land Rover on a barge to Kisangani), and then onwards thru CAR, Cameroon, Nogeria, Niger and Algeria for 3-4 months alone, while she went back home for work. In the end I decided that I didn't want to be away from her for that long at that time (call me pussy whipped, but you get kind of attached to each other after living in a 2,4m X 1,4m tent for a year ), so we shipped the car home in a container.

As for the Expedition Portal and similar sites, we did have a website with a journal that was updated when we got a chance in the occational cities that had an internet café back then. Roughly once a month or so. After keeping it up for almost a decade, we eventually took it down.

If you have similar plans, all I can say is do it. It will change your life, and be something that will effect you for as long as you live.

Needless to say, it helps having a bit of experience off the beaten track in third world countries from before, and experience in dealing with stressful and/or hostile situations. The way I look at it, you can survive by dumb luck, or you can be smart and create your own good luck by making the right decissions when in various situations.
