A question for our Catholic friends
On the same road that our new church is being built, a new RC church has
also been built and has been open for business for about a year. After several months from opening day, a strange (to me anyway, and several former Catholics I've spoken to about it) suddenly appeared in the parking lot. I'm referring to the tall silver & gilt pole in the two attached images which I had Miss Kim make with her I-phone today on our way home from our church service. What is not evident from the pix is that it is mounted on a dark coloured plinth, surrounded by a short rope fence. The whole thing stands about 25' to 30' tall. A tiny little bell is suspended from the arm at the top. I have never seen anything like this at any church...Catholic or otherwise... anywhere I've been to in GB, Europe or North America. I can only surmise that it is a representation of a spire or a substitute for a steeple, and that the bell, though presumably functional, is purely symbolic. My question is simply what is it, and what is its function?

Thanks for the link, 55...I should have thought to look the reference up myself, but didn't
really 'see' the unusual reference. At the times we pass, there are seldom any congregants in the parking lot, although the lot does get pretty full each Sunday. I guess their times of service are slightly off the schedule of our ours. |

There are different "sects", for lack of a better term, of the Catholic Church.
