FJ fought the manhole...
...and the manhole won.
Note the new rear wheel steering feature - one side only. No injuries, no other vehicle involved. Just the Cruiser and the open manhole.

Is there damage to the frame or suspension?
I have an extra set of wheels like that in my garage.

rear suicide half door is jammed shut as well suggesting the the body has been compromised as well. Also, I can't be too sure whether the front wheel hit first, but I suspect it did. I guess we'll know more once the adjuster has inspected it. As a footnote, we're insured through Met Life, and they reacted very well indeed when we called 'em from the scene. By the time the call ended, we knew exactly where the vehicle was going, the shop that is to do the repair, and the rental car was all set. I just hope they don't total it. |

Wise girl, 44...they hold their value very well.
I planned on keeping this one for ever...if they total it I'd certainly consider another, but would prolly go for another Toyota pickup. |

There are a lot of low miles FJs out there because many people bought them as a weekend car, not a daily driver. However, a 10 year old FJ wtih 80K miles brings $25K here. You can get a brand new base Tacoma crew cab 4x4 for $31K.

I never did like the streets in Houston. When I lived there, I drove a sports car. Not many things rattle your teeth more (save an open manhole) than hitting a slab that has raised up 6" in the street. Broke a strut mount on one of those. Pissed me off, royally.

...and they are no better today, Sanders.
Concrete streets relaid less than five years ago are already breaking up, and blacktop streets are just a hodge-podge of patched potholes and cracks - all filled to different levels, and many already breaking up again. But then, if you build a city on a swamp, things like this are likely to happen. |

The good news is my credit card got skimmed so now I'm most likely not going to use the toll road when I leave Wednesday & return Monday because my toll account is now on a dead card. New car won't be here until Wednesday. |

Not yet - crooked storage yard held the FJ over the weekend, not releasing it
until late Monday afternoon. Visited it on Tuesday morning to (a) give the key to the repair shop and (b) to reclaim some belongings still in it. Shop manager says he's confident that it will be repaired, not totalled but it's going to be quite a while getting the parts. Toyota stopped making these vehicles a year or two back so I guess parts acquisition may be a problem. Will call the shop tomorrow for a status report, and then the adjuster to see what the crack is. In the meantime, running around in a little Hyundai Accent roller skate - need another one for the other foot...but it IS wheels! |
