WT steps inside
Either Kim or I feed WT whenever he shows up at feeding time for the
domestic menagerie. He still remains very cautious and is easily spooked if anyone tries to touch him. However, he will take food from the hand. As an experiment, Kim brought his food bowl a few feet into the house to see what would happen. The attached video is from a couple of days ago, and was taken at on the occasion of his second venture through the front door. Note how cautious he is, but also note that Kim's voice does not phase him, Both of us use gentle tones when speaking to him, and his trust level for us is slowly increasing. It would seem an easy enough job to entice him in again with me behind the door to shut and trap him, but we don't want to do this because we have no idea how he would react. We'd like him to stay a few minutes more before we try that. If you listen carefully, you'll hear Holmes yapping from the back yard - and he would be a major problem with yet another big male in the house. Anyway...just thought you'd like to see his progress. The video is a little dark, much lighter and clearer on Kim's i-phone, but good enough for now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cKhaMzvwT0

He looks like a nice kid. Poor thing is so afraid of everything, he must have been mistreated at one time. Don't trap him in, he may not come back, let him get used to the house with a way out.

You're right, Fred...we really have no plan to trap him, but we may move the food dish
further into the room and closer to the window so that he can see out, not closing the door behind him. Should he at some stage feel comfortable enough to sit for a while, or even lay down, that would be the time to think about 'adopting' him. Then the fun would start... However, I'm not so sure that he will ever gain that level of trust. I believe that if he allowed us to touch him, then that would be a major indication that we're on the right track. |

Sit on the floor at his level so he doesn't feel threatened by someone larger. That kid has been traumatized.

Nothing so colorful, 'grains.
Actually most colorful...I called him WT because of his coloring...White and Tan. On reflection TW rolls off th tongue more readily. Update: WT was getting to trust us a great deal more...more so Kim than me. She was able to corral him three times and he submitted quite calmly to her giving him a soapy bath to get rid of the fleas. He seemed to like that. Just lately however, although he shelters under the Cruiser rather than the bed on the porch, and although he turns up regularly twice a day to be fed, he's regressed to not eating until we come indoors. Too bad...he is a good dog, and I love it if he decided to stay, but it's his decision. Just hope the asshole who lives next door doesn't call Animal Control. |

Anyone who would abandon a pet needs a public flogging.

We have three of 'em in the house, plus a stray cat. Another stray cat lives on
the porch...WT is scared of her. If we had a big enough yard, we'd prolly have half a dozen or more, although keeping 'em all fed is getting to be a tad expensive. The church parking lot just down the street is where most of those you'd flog drop off their unwanted dogs; it's heartbreaking to see them run up and down the street looking for the assholes who have just abandoned them...we just can't keep up with 'em all. |

UPDATE:
WT is still with us. In inclement weather he'll take shelter on the porch and often sleeps in the shelter we have for him. He's not entirely regular, sometimes missing one meal a day, sometimes both meals, but when he does appear he waits patiently till the bowl is on the ground and I've either sat down or walked away. He's lost a lot of weight, so maybe needs a worming treatment, and he still does not like anyone to touch him, although he accepts my thumb rubbing his jowl when hand feeding him the last 'knockings' from his food bowl - he has trouble getting the last little bit out of it. When finished, he'll either walk away without so much as a thank you, or will curl up on the porch or in his shelter. At least he knows we won't hurt him, but he still has trust issues. |

A friend's wife has a way with wild critters
I've seen her call a wild fox up and it would eat out of her hand...the same with a deer I've seen her sitting outside and squirrels would come up and sit beside her and she would pet them and feed them nuts... Animals learn trust |

Poor guy must have been through hell to be like that. You've been dealing with him for a while. At least he knows where to go for food and shelter.

Good man Rick good story.
Here its the black bears get a bit to friendly. I make damn sure I am near the door for a quick close and exit. They smaller younger ones I don't trust their a bit spookey but the big old 500+ older ones hell they walk right up to yah and practically demand food. One here I swear is around 600 lbs and he just waddles around and ignores everything. I refuse to directly feed them but some idiot is. Just cleaned up my garbage from last night. Big momma worked on my straps till she got in and snacked. Wish she knew how to clean I might move her in she ain't bad lookin. ADD: I have to set up the game cameras. Have Lee do it I guess. When your bear had a hard day and needs some extra love.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvKVGL95wDw They use his bears for Hollyweird movies. "The Revenant"
