Garand adjustable gas plug thingy.
I mostly roll my own for the Garand, but I have seen some deals on 06 ammo latley. I was wondering about this. I have fired some 150 grain store bought with no issues, but I haven't done it much. Would I just need one of these gas plugs for lobbing heavier loads, or any store bought ammo? So is it good $30, to $40 dollar insurance, or is it just some pile of something to go wrong?

I've never exceeded the 165 gr., nor went lower than 150 gr.
With that in mind, I've also never had a problem with my Garand. I've rolled my own, for the Garand, for over 40 years now. |

My uncle once sighted in a M1 for a guy that gave my uncle ammo to use while sight in. Store bought 30-06. My uncle said first round fired pulled/ripped the rim off the brass. You can hand load any weight round you want as long as the powder burn rate is spec. The adjustable gas plug I bought was installed on one of the M1's however I didn't fool around with store bought ammo. I have new barrels in both those M1's and refused to experiment with them. |

Saw a write-up on the Schuster adjustable gasplug for the Garand in the GCA magazine awhile back. They say it's pretty good for all sorts of things including being able to fire commercial ammo at a lower pressure. I don't have one, because I only feed M2 ball, but the price of a replacement op rod would make me a believer, fwiw.

yep, when i was younger i had a nice lithgow m1.
I picked up a cheapo box of barnual and lost my barrel on the 3rd shot. |
