I have been wanting to explore the ruins of Old Fort McDowell for a looong time.......anyway this morning my girlfriend and i went to the casino for breakfast and we decided to drive out to what is left of the old fort. The fort is now an Indian reservation with approx. 200 people living on it...it is a self contained community with their own hospital, schools etc. The actual old army fort is a loooong way from where i thought it would be....there is a network of paved and unpaved rodes on this rez that are like a maze and they all have indian names that i cant even pronounce....it is about 5 miles north from the main road or stagecoach trail that it would have been in use in the 1800's....the fort was built on a very flat section of land approx. 5 miles north of what is now hwy 87 and was then the military road that connected ft. mcdowall to another military fort near the superstition mountains approx 30-40 miles away and eventually went all the way to tucson. The fort had its own water reservoir that was fed by the verde river........the river is the only reason the fort was built here because perennial sources of water in this part of AZ are hard to come by. As you can see there is not much left and the indians have made little to no effort to preserve what remains....the actual army fort location is not on any maps and it wasn't easy to find....which is one reason it has taken me so long to go there.....very little information available online either. The entire old army fort area grounds is covered in a light tan coat of fine dirt, with no rocks present like there is everywhere else......im certain this was the old parade grounds i was walking on that had all the rocks removed and landscaped by the soldiers that were here over 100 years ago. Those are wild horses in the photo...they roam around in groups like that and there are no fences on the rez so you have to be cautious driving because its not uncommon to see them in the roads. In the very bottom photo im am fairly certain that is what remains of an officers adobe single family home....which there were many at one time. |

I was walking near a barbed wire fence where they were gathered and they started running as a group and then suddenly turned toward me.....one of them hit me in the shoulder and knocked me on my ass knocking the wind out of me and cutting my arm and leg on the rocks when i hit the ground. Nice to look at from a distance tough.... The indians are all well funded by the casino revenue......each member of the tribe gets $32K every 3 months from the tribe.....which is why im not foolish enough to gamble there. |

There is a nice Cavalry Fort near Casper Wyoming...near the Platte River IIRC.
There is one I recall seeing outside of Salt Lake City also...IIRC.
