Recent USMC KA-BAR with blade coating
Has anyone here removed the powdercoat they put on these now a days? Maybe I just need to use it more, and let that wear it off.

Why would you want/need to remove a protective coating?

My Mom's Brother, James, gave me the K Bar he used as a Marine in the Pacific during WWII...a couple weeks before I left for the RVN. I carried it most of the time there. It has the original finish and leather sheath. It does not look "new." Much better than a fucking bayonet. With a good knife, Vilchek pliers and a pair of Craftsman side cutters...I was able to access ammo, rats, "cook," and survive. Ever try to get into Military grade packaging of bulk small arms ammo...C rations, etc. ... without "tools?" Ever try and warm your C rats up in the middle of tigerland without pliers?

Most of the time an "operation" lasted for three or more weeks out in Tigerland. Re-Supply via helochopter was required. Ahhhh...the good old days... Killing Kommies for Mommy...best job I ever had.

I got one that Dad bought during the Ko-Rean War for 50¢. I kept it in one of my BOB's until yesterday. Extreme humidity destroyed the metal zipper slides on the BOB, the Kabar sheath, and leather washers comprising the grip of the knife. If I ever have time I will bead blast the whole thing and make a new set of washers. They don't make them as good as these old ones.

The WWII K-Bar I have from WWII was used island hopping by a Swabbie who's daughter gave it to me. It has staples down the sides of the case plus the normal stitching.
I thought it was a re-make and he said no they put stapes cause the stitching was rotting in the jungles? Are the new K-Bars nice? Yes excellent I have a few. Now NOT being a knife expert just in the feel and heft the general quality of the old one seems far superior. Just my .02? Yes Colonel just read your post the old ones seem? to be the good ones??
