Welcome to the site where the owners and members have had it with playing "nice" and being "inclusive" and "tolerant" of points of view that are destroying the fabric of what made this country great. The members here are sick and tired of politicians of all parties lying, deceiving, stealing, and pretending they are doing it all for the good of the country while selling out to special interests who have the set goal of destroying this country. We have had enough of career politicians who use their office only for personal gain, and who refuse to listen to the people who put them in office. The membership is no longer part of the silent majority who play nice and get along while getting screwed by anyone with a loud voice and an agenda. We will no longer allow anyone to piss down our back and tell us it's raining. And we like guns too.

Question Going From Windows to Linux?

I have a laptop that still powers on, but is getting a might slow. Even after a couple of reformats, it still lags, pauses, freezes or what ever you want to call it. It's older and still on Windows Vista.

Would it be feasible to dump Vista and go with Linux?

I just hate to throw away something that still works.

A direct answer to your question is yes.

You can dual-boot very easily, too. I have a 10 or 11 year Win Vista laptop that's got Linux Mint 13 32bit on and it works great. You can install Linux Mint 18.x 32 bit, too.

Linux Mint is, in my opinion, one of the best and easiest distributions available.

A good source for most distributions : http://distrowatch.com/

Good to see you again!

Windows crapped out on my wife’s computer yesterday and I couldnt get windows repaired.
I tried the recovery and a update disk still no go. She ran out and got a new laptop this morning.
I downloaded mint and its currently mint form the USB but having trouble getting it to install on the hard drive. I think the drive might be bad.

I used one of these and got an old Dell laptop drive working again. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...9SIA1DS28Y2007 Used it to delete all the partitions and format the drive. Basically made it a new drive. I installed Win7 on it, because I was giving it away. It worked better than new, because it didn't have all the added factory crap installed.

OK, this is all new to me. So if I wanted to install Mint, how exactly would I go about doing it?

Download an "Iso" and burn it onto a DVD. https://linuxmint.com/download.php I use the Mate edition, because for me, it's fairly straight forward and easy to use.

Here is some very good literature on getting started. It's pretty thorough and easy to follow, although it can get a bit technical. https://linuxmint.com/documentation/...glish_18.0.pdf

Hope this helps.

I put it on a USB thumb drive if you dont have a dvd burner.

I'll check that out.

I'm assuming that web browsers and office programs work with Linux?

You have to set the thumb drive up to be bootable, which isn't a problem. I had problems loading the betas, too, so I stick with the stable releases.

From the "way back machine", well, a few years ago, anyhow.

Absolutely. I use LibreOffice for my office stuff and it's compatable with just about everything and FREE. I also use Firefox and Blue Moon (Firefox based) browsers.

I set the PC to boot from USB. Doing it that way it would completely erase windows. After trying to salvage it I knew that windows was a lost cause and either I had to buy a copy or get linux to work.

Hard drives are inexpensive. If it is bad I would put solid state drive in it

I already have Libre Office on Windows, so I'm quite familiar with it. This will be my project for the day.

I'm going with dual boot to begin with. If it works well, I may dump Vista altogether.
