Enfield ShtLE V Restoration Begins
I guess restoration isn't real accurate seeing how I'm not doing a 100% correct rebuild, but I don't know what else to call it.
Overall progress so far..... The forearm is from an Indian 2A Enfield. The replacement hardware is from a No1 Mk III, early type parts where possible. Area where I plugged a hole after removing the Indian crossbolt. (The infamous Ishy screw.) Six spots were either plugged or filled with a square filler block. Most are almost invisible. There are three in this picture. Two on the opposite side of the rifle, and one hole plugged on the bottom side where the former rear sight protector screw went in. Close up of the repairs and where the former slot for the rear sight protector was filled. That repair could have been a little better, but I'm content with it. There's a round plug near the middle of the picture. I still have the upper handguard to make using the front handguard off a No1 Mk III and the rear handguard off a No 4 Mk I. These will be grafted together and shaped to fit. The final difficulty will be the middle barrel band. I'm going to try shaping a rear band to fit but barring that, the only alternative is a very expensive repro part. I've decided to leave Roy Mills autographed butt plate on. He made himself part of the rifles history so I thought it best to give him credit for it.

I have a 1917 Enfield Shtle III. The fore stock is a little warped and makes the front sight look "off".

That's some good looking work, RetVet.
Leaving ol' Roy's autograph on there will give it a touch of character.

Good job. It's fun to restore an old soldier.
Several years ago I took one on that had really been trashed. I probably spent more time on than it was worth. But it was an interesting project. http://www.dirtydozensbunker.com/showthread.php?t=9634

Old Enfield stocks are not as plentiful as they used to be. Ten years ago I was picking up Enfield rifles as U-Fix-Em's from Century Arms for as little as $39 a piece. Now days, just a forearm off a Drill Purpose rifle runs $75 or more when you can find them. A lot more for the better condition stuff.
