For those that fly fish...
I want to get my stuff set up, and checked local places here for line and flies. I can't find anybody locally that even carries the stuff. I have found starter packs with an assortment of stuff...but I don't really need another rod/reel combo. Once I get good at it again (haven't gone fly fishing for many years), then I'll consider getting a better quality rig.
What I'd like to know is where some of you get your line and stuff from. You know...a place with good customer service. Thanks in advance. |

I drive down to Indianapolis and go to Gander Mountain. If I order online, I'll usually order from Cabellas. If in Florida I'll go to Bass Pro/Outdoor World.
Driving up to the Michigan UP, I'll stop in at Jays Sporting Goods in Claire, MI or stop at The Fly Factory on the AuSable River in Grayling, Mi. If you know anything about fly fishing, you know you should be casting upstream. But the current was moving so fast at that time that I had to cast downstream in order to have my fly in the water for any time at all.

Good looking action shot Pogo. Almost like it's from a movie or Saturday morning fishing show. I'm jealous. Not much around here like that.
I was really hoping I could find what I need in one of the little mom and pop shops, but as I've found out, there's not much of a call for that type of equipment. I can't even find waders. The one place close to here that I thought for sure would have something...MC Sports...didn't have anything at all. As it is, either time for about an hours worth of road trip....or I'm ordering online. Thanks. |

I have a Browning Gold Medallion graphite fly rod and a Courtland graphite reel. I usually use a dry line and tie my own flies unless I'm fishing in the brush for panfish, and then I'll use rubber spiders.
Get a good book on tying knots for fly fishing, and learn it. Learn how to tie the Nail Knot for attaching the leader to the fly line. That little eyelet that pushes into the fly line so that you can attach a leader messes up your cast. |

Somewhere here I have a Harrocks-Ibbodson split bamboo fly rod.
It is a two piece rod, with an extra forepiece that doesn't have an eye on the tip. The other forepiece DOES have an eye. Probably not worth much, anymore, with with the graphite rods taking over. |

Why fish for flies when most people just swat them?
I know... Brian

With it having been many years since I've gone fly fishing, I've been looking at some sites that show how to tie the knots. Once I get that figured out again and get back out, all I'll have to remember is how to do the "figure 8" that my grandfather showed me when I was younger.

Don't give up on that one yet. Some folks pay big bucks for a bamboo fly rod.

Many years ago. I got caught up in selling a whole bunch of other stuff and skipped it. Then ebay started screwing with people, raising the prices,demanding you use their payment system, ad nauseum. I bailed out, no more ebay crap. Had a good little business going too. |

FWIW;
G.W.Sears (Nessmuk), the great outdoorsman and writer of the 1870's and '80's wrote the following in his book "Woodcraft and Camping". "Charles Dudley Warner, who writes charmingly of woods life, has the following in regard to trout fishing, which is so neatly humorous that it will bear repeating: "It is well known that no person who regards his reputation will ever kill a trout with anything but a fly. It requires some training on the part of the trout to take to this method. The uncultivated trout in unfrequented waters prefers the bait; and the rural people, whose sole object in going a-fishing appears to be to catch fish, indulge them in their primitive state for the worm. No sportsman, however, will use anything but a fly—except he happens to be alone." Regards, ... |

When I find it I'll be able to ID it's birthdate! Even if I didn't know how to spell the first name properly. Haven't seen it in several years now. But, I KNOW it's still around here somewhere! |
