Awaiting a new fire starter block
A few weeks back a co-worker of mine that trades mil surplus gear was looking over a tobacco pipe I had made from aircraft grade aluminum on my lathe and mill. He stated that he wanted his dad to go back to pipes over the cigars he currently smoked.... I proposed a trade of a pipe that I'd make in exchange for a magnesium fire block to stash back for my camping gear. The pipe I traded him is on the far right, the one in the middle is for a friend that I'll see in Ohio for a shoot in may.
Call me crazy I just wanted to make a pipe that I could do easy, last a long time, and test some machining skills I'm working on.

Looks very similar to a pipe I had back in the '60s.

Metal smoking pipes DO transmit the heat.
I was never satisfied with one. That's why wood was allways best. Sure, they get kinda warm, but also lose that heat quickly. Might say the same about metal. The cake doesn't stick well in metal either. Your call. |

I've always favored traditional briar pipes myself, but I see that your machining talent could also be applied to special attachments to noisemakers

I'm working my way up to making lead molds at the moment... I have seen interesting things done with oil filters and other mechanical devices though.

Let me know if you come up with a "Gas Check" producer.
Used to be one, on the market, that made checks from metal cans. Last one I saw punched them out of aluminum cans. Wasn't exactly the best material though. Steel cans also had their drawbacks but were still much better than aluminum. |
