This should help you out.

I'm not so sure about that list. Red dot is slower than both Bullseye and 700x, at least in my manuals.

Hmm, curiouser and curiouser!
I thought so too ......... but ..... Now I've good sources showing it both ways! HOGDON site shows it this way; 1. NORMA R1 2. Vihtavuori N310 3. Hodgdon TITEWAD 4. Alliant Red Dot 5. Hodgdon Clays 6. IMR, Co "HI-Skor" 700-X 7. Alliant Bullseye 8. Hodgdon TITEGROUP ------------------------------------- While Alliant says Red Dot burns 5.9% slower than Bullseye! but they also state their figures don't mean anything and their comparative listing page is defunct! Another good Argument for only using the latest manual and always checking and double checking. For anyone who doesn't know why we're concerned about this, these are extremely fast burning powders, which means they're closer to exploding than burning, and load changes of even 1 or 2 TENTHS of a grain of powder could be very bad news indeed. I'll keep checking, anyone who has any information, please join in. I do know that Alliant has been reformulating powders to make them burn "Cleaner", whatever the answer is, thats probably at the bottom of it! It wasn't broke, so some idiot couldn't pass up the chance to "fix" it! Regards, Last edited by 5knives; 03-29-2006 at 02:09 AM. |

Agreed, I've seen it listed both ways along with a few others on the list. And of course it is always smart to stay with published load data in a manual. For everybody else, don't ever try to substitute one powder for another because of any burning rate list.

By way of further explanation, the ONLY valid use of a burning rate list is this: You've worked up loads and had good luck with "XYZ" powder. You got a bunch of empties to reload, you're out of powder, and no one in town has any. You could check and see that "ABC" and "KLM" are on either side of "XYZ"! You would NOT substitute either of those powders! You MIGHT look for a load in a loading manual using the same bullet and using either "ABC" or "KLM" powder. and work up a load using that, with some expectation of similar performance to your old "XYZ" load. The Steps between powders on these lists are NOT even, sometimes they're baby steps and sometimes they're giant steps. Regards, |
