MOA or Milliradian Scopes?
Which do you prefer, and why?
The reason I ask is, my 6.5 Creedmoor came as a 'package deal' (rifle, scope & bipod), and the scope is a MOA scope. Most long distance shooter friends I have around here, use 'Mil scopes'. Sadly, I don't get the chance to get out to shoot it very often (maybe 3-4 times a year). I can hit what I aim at out to 1000 yards, but I need to be 'coached' by my friend (who uses 'Mils'), and it takes him a bit to 'do the math'. I'm still trying to wrap my head around Mils vs MOA and the 'math' involved with MOA conversion (since these guys & gals mostly use 'Mils'). |

I like MOA because I'm old & it's imperial.
1 MOA = 1" for every 100yds. If I'm at 800 yds, & make 1 minuet of angle adjustment, it will move the point of impact by 8". MilRads are 1/1000 of the distance from the target. 1 Mil will move your point of impact by 1000 mm (1 meter) at 1000 meters (1KM) If you have a rangefinder, Mils are really easy and quick as the maths are as good as instant but I still think in MOA. |

.mil/.mil for me
It is a more manageable number system. At 1000 yards I am 34.1 MOA low, but only 9.9 mils. It is easier for me to work with. And with my christmas tree reticle in mils, my holdover and wind drift are visual rather than doing clickety click on the turret.

Another FYI:
It is really hard to sell a used MOA scope these days unless you are giving a big fat discount. Or, you can get a great deal on a NF ATACR MOA used scope if you can tolerate MOA. I pay the price for mils. |
