Anyone have any experience with self inflating air mattresses
I'm going to tent camp when I go on vacation in Montana and Saskatchewan. I want to travel lighter than how I"ve camped in the past. I'm taking a small tent and no cot. So I want an air mattress. And I don't want any junk like the Army air matress or the crap they sell at Walmart. And I don't want a roll up pad.
I've just about decided on a "ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad" air mattress. Anyone have any experience with them or other good ones? I"m thinking about getting one in XL size. http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/pr...omfort-air-pad

An interesting concept, kind of spendy but when it comes to comfort and less weight?
Makes big sense to me also. |

Are you going to be backpacking, or camping at a camp site? If a camp site, I'd pack an inflatable bed and a 12 volt or battery-powered pump.
I use an inflator that runs on C cell batteries with my cheap Coleman inflatable bed. It is pretty fast. If I were backpacking though, I'd want one of those self-inflating mattresses.

I have a AEROBED.......single size.....they are about the size of a sleeping bag and they store away the same way inside a little draw string nylon bag....they are very good quality and about as comfortable as a inflatable bed can be.
They require a electrical out let to run the motor....i dont remember of they have a version that runs off batteries.

I use Therm a Rest self infiltrators.
I have a few depending what I am doing ultra lights to the luxury series. I had them for years with out ever getting a hole in one. And they have been on 10 day trips in the mountains and on rock islands in Canada. You cant go wrong with one. |

If that's the one that doesn't require power to inflate but self-inflates my brother has one and he's happy with it.

Somewhere....I should still have the "self inflating" air mattress that was US military issue at one time. I backpacked the Appalachian Trail for quite a number of months and it never let me down.

My self inflater was fine until the cat did a burn out on it and made it holey. Deflated as soon as I put my weight on it. I always figured a puncture would be the end of it. Better it was killed at home before I went bush than out there. I just use a 2" foam rolled up in a swag. Works for me.
