The results from an encounter with an Acura's wayward wheel
I have found no sign of where the wheel emerged, but emerge it did, crossed a median and whacked another car coming from the opposite direction. Probably straight out the back.

Yeah...wtf indeed.
Had I not have delivered a birthday cake to my wife's nephew in the evening, I wouldn't have been in that neighborhood. Had the cake's recipient answered the door straight away instead of keeping me waiting for quite some time, I would have been past that spot long before the wheel came loose from the Acura. Had I been doing 40 mph instead of 45, I would have been one of the rubber-neckers. But karma had it that I and two others would get damage done to our vehicles. And to just add to the pain, the kid had only just bought the Acura, and was trusting that the insurance on his other car would cover his driving this one. What's the betting that his policy doesn't cover that eventuality? |

That metal plate did kind of save things under their though Rick.
Rt. 95 in my Fiero with a buddy cruising at about 75 mph roof I had customized to come off and its off. Tractor trailer in front of me a tire comes off. We didn't even have time to scream. Act of God it bounces and skims the top of our heads damn near gave us a frigging hair cut. Took us both a few minutes to say HOLY SHEET.

I was behind a semi on I40 when a set of dual wheels came off the trailer. Was following him in the right lane. The wheels came off the left side rear axle. The 2 wheels and tires still bolted together came off the trailer and passed the truck. They went into the median, hit the shoulder on the interstate going the other direction and flew into the air probably 50 feet before continuing into some pasture land and starting a grass fire. It was cool to watch, luckily nobody got hit.
Rick, you could probably find that skid plate fairly cheap for a used one. A lot of the FJ guys remove the stock one for fancy aftermarket stuff |

I've seen a wheel come lose on the opposite side I-95, get airborne, jump the median, bounce close to me and hit the car behind me, a lot of damage all around. I got lucky that day.

You could replace that skid plate with a 3/16" steel one. You have Shrockworks fab shop local to you. They practically set the industry standard for such items.
Under armor on my Xterra has kept me from some serious repairs more than once, judging by some of the rock gouges in the steel. https://www.shrockworks.com/FJ-Cruis...-pr-16264.html

A friend of mine was driving a Saab going from NJ into NYC when a steel plate fell off a truck ahead of him and totaled his Saab.
