I'm looking to buy a new laptop
I want a small light one with a screen between 13" - 15". And I don't want some old out of date clunker. I don't want Windoze or Apple.
I'm considering Chromebook. It is a flavor of Android. One thing I absolutely need is for it to work with Helicon Remote for my camera. Straight Android does work with Helicon software. I think I'll send an email to Helicon and ask them if their software will work with Chromebook.

I found this: http://www.heliconsoft.com/helicon-remote-sdk/
Since Android is Linux based, you should be able to make it work? Maybe order one with a blank drive and take it from there? Just a thought. Brian

Have you thought about obtaining a "bare bones" laptop? You could do whatever you wanted and not be chained to someone else's operating system and configuration.

Hell, I could sit in my recliner all day, with a good keyboard. I even thought about hooking it up to the 50" TV. My recliner is less that ten feet from that big screen. |

I'm sure you've checked all the usual outlets. A while back, I was looking at bare bones kits and got interested in the notebook/laptop sections. I believe Newegg or Tigerdirect had pretty fast kits with processors, but I can't remember. It may have been one of the not so common sites, though...
Found this while looking around: http://www.directron.com/laptopdiy.html It's dated, but little has changed. Brian |

I might end up doing that. Also, while I'm not a big fan of Dell computers, they have some decent prices on laptops loaded with Ubuntu.
I contacted Helicon and they advised me their software didn't work with Chromecast. But the Windows version of Helicon will work with Linux using Wine. |

I'm no fan of Dell, either, but I had a 620 Inspiron, or whatever it is, given to me. They said it didn't work. After I kicked all the viruses out of it and got the drive all cleaned up, it's not a bad secondary rig.

Pogo, have you looked at Toms hardware website? They test all kinds of computer things...they may help you in your search.

Yes. I"ve used Toms Hardware several times. Agreed, that is a good resource for information.

Somewhere I saw laptops with no drives or memory. Seems they had pretty fast Intel processors, too. Now, I can't for the life of me remember where. I ran across them when I was looking for parts to build this one.

If you buy it off Amazon do not give it a good review. I did with this laptop went to buy another one and the damn price was up a $100 bucks.
