Going From Windows to Linux?
I have a laptop that still powers on, but is getting a might slow. Even after a couple of reformats, it still lags, pauses, freezes or what ever you want to call it. It's older and still on Windows Vista.
Would it be feasible to dump Vista and go with Linux? I just hate to throw away something that still works.

A direct answer to your question is yes.
You can dual-boot very easily, too. I have a 10 or 11 year Win Vista laptop that's got Linux Mint 13 32bit on and it works great. You can install Linux Mint 18.x 32 bit, too. Linux Mint is, in my opinion, one of the best and easiest distributions available. https://linuxmint.com/ A good source for most distributions : http://distrowatch.com/ Good to see you again! Brian

Windows crapped out on my wife’s computer yesterday and I couldnt get windows repaired.
I tried the recovery and a update disk still no go. She ran out and got a new laptop this morning. I downloaded mint and its currently mint form the USB but having trouble getting it to install on the hard drive. I think the drive might be bad. |

OK, this is all new to me. So if I wanted to install Mint, how exactly would I go about doing it?

Here is some very good literature on getting started. It's pretty thorough and easy to follow, although it can get a bit technical. https://linuxmint.com/documentation/...glish_18.0.pdf Hope this helps. Brian |

I put it on a USB thumb drive if you dont have a dvd burner.
I used the new bata version of mint that may have been the issue. |

I'll check that out.
I'm assuming that web browsers and office programs work with Linux? |

I set the PC to boot from USB. Doing it that way it would completely erase windows. After trying to salvage it I knew that windows was a lost cause and either I had to buy a copy or get linux to work.

I'm going with dual boot to begin with. If it works well, I may dump Vista altogether. |
