Best way to stop a vehicle attack?
With all the vehicle based attacks lately, what is your typical CCW's best strategy in stopping a vehicle based attack? Shoot out the tires, go for the windshield? What caliber gun is best suited etc?

From the movie Magnum Force, Harold Francis Callahan used a 8 3/8" M29, but was firing a "light .44 Special load"... (some scenes show 6 1/2" barreled revolver - continuity not a priority)
http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Dirty_Harry Update to modern times... How about a 500 S&W, with a 400 grn bullet. Not going to carry it under that 70s skin tight suit jacket, but... the baggier fit currently conceals it (have done so myself, just for giggles). And a full power 500 S&W load turns that 180 grn .44 Special into a girly-boy load for the limp-wrist set... 400 grns @ 2,000 fps vs. 180 grns @ +/- 1,000 fps - you do the math. Yeah... only five rounds in the cylinder, rather than six, but then... double taps are no longer required. Even George Reeves' character would have his dick planted in the dirt. |

1st. No matter what you do, if it's moving it's going to keep movie until it hits a barrier/tips over or until it runs out of inertia on its own( assuming accelerator not stuck) 2nd. Can the average shooter hit a small target( drivers head)moving at 40mph + through a driver/passenger side window with a handgun? To be honest I don't know I I could. |

An old friend of mine (LEO) made such a shot on a murder suspect in Nevada.
Colt ,45 auto through the driver's door, into the side of the body and clipped the heart. Driver died. My friend is in late retirement now, still a damned good guy. |

It's like killing an elephant that's charging, no matter how many shots you get out it's still going to hit you. Just get out of the way if you can, you try to shoot the car or the driver and there is a large chance of hitting somebody else. That kind of things only happen in the movies.

Situational awareness. Don't let yourself get boxed in. Watch everything and everyone around you. Know where barriers that can keep you from such a situation are - corners, other vehicles, doorways, etc.... After a while, it becomes second nature and you are doing it subconsciously.
You would probably never a chance to draw and shoot - just move out of the way. But, if you did -- aim for the driver.
