The Mythical "Best action"
Building off DR's Mythical AAR thread, what's ypour opinion of the best action type? And more importantly, back it up with a good reason.

I like hot steamy action, with just enough passion to keep it that way.

A good Bolt Action, because it is more safe.
OR a break style singleshot. |

I was brought up with a bolt action in my hand and nothing else has ever felt so comforting and natural. All the other types are simply novelties. <flak jacket on>

Like DR, my first rifle was a bolt action. I've used a lot of other ones over the years, but the old tried and true bolt just "feels right" on a rifle. Mr. Mauser's design is just dang hard to improve on, even after over a hundred years...

I like guns enough that this pick one is really a mute point. I trust the capabilities of all of mine. Everyone I own is best in class in the category I made up when I bought it.

I favor lever guns......... 'cause when I was growing up, that is what all the good cowboys had............. I have bolt guns, semi's, break opens, etc. but I just like lever guns and that is reason enough.

I have no preference really, although for hunting I do prefer a bolt action,,some guys I know gotta that thay semi auto for the "follow up shot",,although strangely I have never needed one,I also like the break barrel single shot, that'll keep ya real honest, but as far as "best" I believe it's a matter of preference,,but if you really wanna compare actions maybe a nice smooth as glass silent draw of a Swedish mauser compared to a cruddy noisy klanky action on the Savage edge I looked at,thats where it's at in my book

Ya, "best" is sort of like beauty...in the eye of the beholder. Auto-loaders are fun if they're military. Others sound sort of "clanky." Levers are sort of like toys to me...sometimes fun but I never took one seriously. I'm just a total "bolt guy" and this includes even single shots. Break action? Excellent material for tent pegs.
Other than this I have no bias or preference. |

Hey now, for single shots, I'd rather have a break-open than anything else. Dirt simple, easy to use, easy to clean, and very little can go wrong with any of them. Maybe that's why I'm planning a Rossi youth combo for my son's 10th birthday. 22 and 12 gauge. Yeah, 12 could be a bit much for a 10 year old, but I do have a MEC 12ga press, so I can load him 3/4 oz handicap loads to start with, and scale it up as he gets bigger.
