Ruger SP 101
Any of you wheel gun experts know anything about these pieces?
I may have the chance to pick one up in VG condition, .357 with a 2.25 inch barrel for $400 at the onslaught of the dickering process? Any advise or info is helpful.

Folks as have them rate them very highly, maybe a tad weighty, but rugged and reliable as all get out, with good accuracy ... considering the short sight radius.
Some of the early ones can ONLY be used with 125 grain loads, but that's what you want in a defense .357 anyhow! Good Luck! Regards, ... |

$400 is a good price for it. But try to talk it down a little to get just a "better" price.

I loved mine, get the Houge grip for it if you do get it. It was sold to my friend who carries it every day now. He was hitting out to 75 yards with it against my GP100 with the 6 inch barrel.

Sold one yesterday for $400.
Nice gun but kinda small for .357 mag and my somewhat weak hands.

Had two of them Icarus.. Quality made nice weapons..
Pretty sure I paid $325 new for them some years back. In the correct hands, not mine anymore, good close range defensive gun.. Gave one to my Nam Bro, ah hell he liked it so I gave it too him. Other I traded for building materials. $400 seems fair in good condition, I guess with inflation these days.. So yes, good little weapon.

I have a 2" .38 only and a 3" .357. They're very well built weapons. I paid $350 used for the .38 and $425 new for the .357 a few years ago. I'm not into shooting .357 out of 2" barrels. Out of the 3" it's pretty tolerable. I've seen the prices creeping up on the SP's in the last couple of years and I would say $400 in excellent shape for a used 2" would be a very fair price. They're heavier than many other 5round .357 revolvers. A pocket or ankle carry with a 2" SP101 would not work for me, but anything else is just fine. Teddy Jacobson is a well known pistolsmith out of Texas and the SP101 is one of the very few non custom modern production revolvers that gets his recommendation. He did say that just recently Ruger decided it was wise to start using some MIM parts in them. He's forgot more about pistols and their quality than I'll ever know. He's got a website and he will talk with you if you're interested in getting it slicked up. I've heard Gemini also does excellent work on the SP's. Neither of mine have had any work done on them and I'm very happy with them as is. I will say that my 2" .38 SP101 is the tightest revolver I've ever owned. The 3" is not as tight, but is just fine and probably more the norm. They are both very accurate and reliable.

Yup!! Carry one on a regular basis when the wife isn't stealing it to take to WV!
Mine is the 3" version that I put a Hogue grip, lighter Wolfe trigger return and hammer springs, and I polished the action. It's one of my favorite carry pieces. Sorry for the poor quality of the picture, a photographer I am not. lol
