I seldom see them where I live now. But when I was young in Southern Indiana I saw them all the time during Summer months.

Lots of lightning bugs this year. My
6 month old German Shepherd female goes up about 6 ft after them. |

Around here we are waiting for the semi annual locust hatch.
Those are some fugly insects and not enough sea gulls to eliminate them entirely. |
