I'll ask a question... what are some tell tale signs of crap at a gun show as far as C&R stuff... I would like to find a good condition 98 Mauser and 303 Enfield but am not experienced enough to know what to look for. If I by a weapon I want one that works and not just a decoration...
What I do know is to look at pitting and rust, markings, and how tight the bolt is... what else should I examine? |

If I were you, I'd get a C&R license and order fliers from SOG, AIM, and several other C&R dealers. Get a Shotgun News and look at the ads for various firearm dealers that cater to C&R guys.
For a shooter, try to get at least a "Good", preferably a "VG" or better. |

A VG condition rifle is preferred. When ordering online you can save quite a few bucks. As noted you should get a C&R liscense. It costs $30 for 3 years and it pays for itself quickly. You should just check around and see what other people are getting from the same company in the same grade then take it from there on what to order. As far as getting somthing at a gun show, you should examine it thoroughly. Check the bore mainly to make sure it looks good. Then, check for bluing and stock wear. Make sure everything functions fine. For a No.4 Mk.I in decent shape you should pay around $125 give or take about $50 depending on the condition. The K98 mauser varies quite a bit but can be had for as low as $125-150 and some other nice ones for around $250. So research what others are getting and then use that. Good Luck
