Sleep Deprivation and SHTF
They did a sleep-deprivation exercise with our battalion at Ft. Carson. It was called to a halt when an M60 tank drove off into an arroyo in front of my foxhole. It took 3 M88's to pull it out. The driver and TC were pretty messed up.
After 90 hours, I had some pretty wild hallucinations, too. They didn't give us any drugs than the coffee packets in our MRE's. Quote:

Some guys in the sandbox would put Tabasco from MRE's in their eyes to stay awake.

Your mind will go before your body.
Your body within reason can get somewhat used to little or no sleep. Ft. Polk Louisiana A.I.T..1968.
Some night training setting up a perimeter were gonna get attacked shoot blanks have fun playing Army etc. etc. Morning ah time to hit the sack cool. Sarge comes over to me. "Get on the truck yah got K.P." What? I been up all damn night you frigging idiot I am tired mom would let me sleep you frigging jerkoff don't you frigging stupid....." Of course I did not say that to his big ass. Yes Sargent. But I got my second wind and learned you can go without sleep. To long? nah as the article says the body and mind fall apart.

Pills readily available while I was in Vietnam known as CIBAs. I used them and did not become addicted.

Grabbing a quick nap when possible, even if only 10-15 minutes, definately helps a person to keep going when in a sleep deprivation situation. Although I really feel that it is tougher dealing with sleep deprivation now, compaired to when I was in my early 40’s, I often see that younger people in their late 20’s or early 30’s that I occationally work with just don’t seem to have the same tolerance. Which I think has to do with mindset and training. Or lack of it on their part.
One thing is for sure, the brain functions substantially better if it gets a few hours of sleep per day.
