So I got this Winchester 1897...
I picked it up a the last show from a walker, or the one before it. I don't remember which, any way I always wanted one, but a take down like my Stevens. Well this one wasn't the take down, but it had CCBA stamped on the stock, the price was good since he had been down most of the tables, it was kinda cool, Ill take it.
A nice addition to the family. I been shooting the thing, and I definitely love it. Its probably not going to replace my 520 as the "Riot control" but its right next to her. Anywho, I been looking around and figured out its a 1923 date of manufacture, and someone important like owned it because I find info that rail, bank, and police units were stamped. I can't however find a list of said owners, or figure out what CCBA is. So there is the marking, y'all got any ideas? Also, any recommendations to fit a sling without F'ing up the original looks.

Tinman.
I called the Winchester Cody Museum on mine to try to get info as to its being used in WWI, WWII, by whoever?
All they could do was give me a letter as to it year of manufacture. Guess? they had a fire and it destroyed their collection of records pertaining to who the guns were sold to. Mine pre-dates WWI too 1909. http://marauder.homestead.com/Model97sn.html Winchester museum wanted $75 for the letter, saying the computer links are off by a year. Hell I don't mind donating but close enough info for me. We had problems feeding the full size 2 3/4" shells in, A history check led me to that shells were rolled a little less than the modern ones now? True false I do not know? has one also. See if it is stamp on top of the bore with U.S. something? But nice grab, their great shotguns. Pictures not original screw on face plate their, needs replacing.

97s are great collectables, especially if you have their personal history.

The Winchester model 1897 is probably the best pump shotgun design ever made.
You can hold the trigger back and pump fire it.

I wouldn't turn down a deal on that one either. I like old Winchesters. I like all old guns as far as that goes....

Here's a link that MIGHT help you with your 97.
http://www.gunvaluesboard.com/i-have....-9408326.html Found it real interesting, and you might find the meaning of those initials. I only read a couple entries, but they seem to be knowledgeable. |

Thanks 10Bears, Ill see if they know what CCBA is. My barrel and receiver also have a similar cartouche that 4th's has. I tried to get a pic but my digi camera is not that great up close.
Both my 520, and the 1897 slamfire, its fun. |

The Winchester '97 is truly an iconic gun. Having said that on the occasions I've had to shoot them they are real shoulder-pounders unless fitted w/ some kind of recoil pad on the stock. That factory skinny piece of plastic just doesn't get the job done, lol.

Well I did some poking around on that site and found CCBA could be Clinton County Bank of America. Someone else has an older one with it on their stock also. Gonna have to do some more digging but I'm learnin more.

Now if it was an armored car company designation? It's getting interesting. |
