Care to expand your question a bit?

As ir stands, we'd need about 400 pages to completely answer a question that broad.

A true assault rifle per D.O.D handbooks, is a medium power rifle or carbine, with a larger magazine capacity than standard battle rifles, capable of full automatic fire, accurate enough to get 50% hits on a man size target at 300 meters and is used to provide suppressive fire on an enemy position during the last (100-200 yards) phase of an assault.

But due to their low cost, reliability, acceptable accuracy and ruggedness, millions of the semi-automatic look-alikes are used for law enforcement, self protection, sporting and animal control purposes world wide!

And that's the REAL short answer
