K98 sniper
I went to an auction house this afternoon and saw a K98 with scope. It is listed as a sniper but may be assembled from original parts to be a clone. Not sure if it was manufactured as a sniper to begin with. The serial # on the scope was diffferent from the reciever & bolt (which both match).
What do you guys think this is worth? Don't know enough about these to make a determination of value. If nothing else, it may be a half decent clone. |

Those look like correct turret mounts compared to what I have in my books. Appears to be a late war rifle given the stamped trigger guard and bottom plate. Maker and year are important in determining a rough value. The sling looks like an aftermarket repro.
If truly all matching on the rifle you're looking at 1 grand or so, again depending on condition and maker/year and that's just for the rifle. If a true sniper, all matching, you can double or triple that figure.

Very hard to tell if it's original. The scope may have been replaced in service. or the rifle could be put together. If all the parts are original, as a put together it would have respectable value. The usual problem on a put together is that one or more parts may be repros. I do have to say it certainly looks like an original and the parts seem to have the expected finish wear. I guess the value is what any one is willing to pay. Here's my SWAG. Based on what I've seen, I think it might go north of 3K, depending on how its advertised and how many interested bidders there are. Of course, legit capture papers (papers can be faked too) would make the value go through the roof. Very interesting rifle, thanks for sharing.

The follow up story is as follows: The bidding started at $2000 and went to $2600. I'm now inclined to believe it was real... but still don't know for sure. Hopefully, whoever bought it had sufficient knowledge before hand.
Interesting piece I thought. |
