Welcome to the site where the owners and members have had it with playing "nice" and being "inclusive" and "tolerant" of points of view that are destroying the fabric of what made this country great. The members here are sick and tired of politicians of all parties lying, deceiving, stealing, and pretending they are doing it all for the good of the country while selling out to special interests who have the set goal of destroying this country. We have had enough of career politicians who use their office only for personal gain, and who refuse to listen to the people who put them in office. The membership is no longer part of the silent majority who play nice and get along while getting screwed by anyone with a loud voice and an agenda. We will no longer allow anyone to piss down our back and tell us it's raining. And we like guns too.

Default I've selected .308 to get my first elk....

cuz that's what I have right now in the caliber inventory.... among .243, .30-30, .223 lol, 7.62x54r, 8mm mauser

anything in my list ring truer for elk under 300 yards compared to .308 fellas?

lemme know, my goal is quick&clean.... aim small/m.s.

Nothing wrong with 7.62x54 or 8mm. I would use the 8mm.

Just avoid shooting them up the hind end. The .308 will not go up a bull elk's hind end and make it to the vitals. Also, better use 165s or 180s.

I would take the gun I shoot the best, as shot placement & confidence makes the kill.

A good 8mm with 190 gr. bullet should do the trick for you.

I had a bunch of Nosler Ballistic Tipped stuff that was awesome.

Edited to add: I was shooting it out of a Yugo M24 Mauser.

The last time I hunted elk I never got close enough for a clean shot, they never stopped moving and the range was 275 to 300+ yds. Use a heavy and accurate bullet. there a lot bigger than a deer so take your time for that shot.

Any of the three you have chosen so far will do it, but I would take the 8mm in the Mauser I have because I'm best with it. In short I agree with Baboon, take the one your best with.

The .308 is fine for elk.as noted with heavy bullets. I take no chances,I use a .375 H&H
for all elk shots, including above the elk exhaust port. It always works.
