WWII Field Kitchen Overview.
The GI Field Kitchen during WWII was part of the Company HQ, designed to serve 150-180 men. They intended to serve 2 hot meals per day: Breakfast & Supper, with Dinner (Lunch) as a combat ration. They were equipped with stoves, water heaters and mermite cans to deliver the hot food
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEt4rrtEN_k Read an article on the foods served in WWII Africa between the Germans and the allies. Ironically the Krauts food played an important part in their combat readiness and ability to fight. Supplies were tough to get for the Krauts and what they ate was giving them dysentery. Not good for moral and troop ability to fight.

American troops in WWII ate pretty decent grub when available. The Krauts not so much; bread, sardines, pickled herring & sausage. The Japs were lucky to get their rice & fish heads.

I was in the army in the early to mid 60's and did pull KP a number of times. The cooks in my company were pretty good guys, you did your job and they left you alone. I would have hated being a cook. Weird hours that changed several times a month and the having to feed troops in the field really fucked them over. I like to cook, but I like doing it for myself either in the kitchen or camping out. Army cooks had a shitload of stuff to maintain, cleaning was paramount. The video was interesting as they were using the same equipment pretty much for field use when I was in.
