Reloading .45 ACP with black powder?
Anyone know of this being tried?
I'm thinking about trying it out for my 1911A1. I know it will be dirty, but I clean my guns. I'm thinking FFF Goex and standard large rife primers with 200 gr. cast SWC bullets. Do you think I should stick with a heavier bullet - say, a cast 230 gr. RN?

I think you'll be safe. BP doesn't have the same pressure as smokeless powder. Cowboy loads would often use BP for effect. I haven't CAST BOOLITS in a while. hint

I wonder if the slide will cycle?.....not much room in a .45ACP case compared to a .45 colt to fit enough Black powder in to get any where near factory smokeless velocity?

Yes it can be done. Yes it is safe, you can NOT get enough black powder in the case to hurt anything. No it will not cycle the slide and makes a heck of a mess! This is fun to pull on some know it all dumb arse, especially if you drop it in THEIR gun.

I saw a video some place where CAS 'Wild Bunch" shooters were using BP loads in 1911s, it was smoky.

The best way i can describe the residue left behind after shooting black powder is burned hotdog oxide.
After shooting it you really understand why revolvers of the 19th century had their cylinders heavily beveled at the factory. |

If you could find some non Pyrodex FFF powder I think it would work, but black powder reloaded ammo in humid area,s wont keep very long.
