Fishing Trip
This is one of three fairly large sharks I brought up to the boat using only 15 lb line. It was perhaps 6 foot, maybe a little more. One other I caught was probably over 7 foot. This one took me about an hour to bring within gaffing distance because I was using such a light line.
We let all of the big ones go. No use in killing them. We did keep a couple of smaller ones that we ate. Click on that arrow in the bottom left. I don't know why I got an extra arrow in the video. My buddy hit one of the biggest sharks in the head with a pipe just to see what he would do. Man, that shark went apeshit.

Way to cool. It's been a while since I've had any shark. May have to talk my brother into going on a fishing trip and have him send me some steaks.

Looks like one helluva good time!
Were you bachin' it, or did the wives go along, too?

Cool, you did better that I thought. Did you ever get down to Isla Morada or did you just stay around the mainland?

We didn't hit any of the big ones. We did go to Dildo key though.

From the pictures I'd say you had a good trip, good weather, good fishing and good eats ... can't beat that.

No, there wasn't any critter there. I was going to mention that those big jewfish like the one in the 4th picture down cruise along the edge of those mangroves. And as soon as they pick up your bait, they head for the mangrove roots. It's seldom you can land a big one in that area, because they head into the roots and your line will be cut on all of the shells attached to the roots. I was using a rod with 20 lb line on it, and somehow managed to get him to the boat before he cut my line on all of the sharp shells. I caught perhaps 10-15 of those jewfish, and he was the biggest. I had about the same number of them break off my line as they slid into the mangroves. You are prohibited from keeping them, so I turned all of them loose. That big one had about a half dozen hooks with leaders and swivels and sinkers stuck in his mouth. Many were stainless steel and would have never rusted away. I took all of the hooks out of his mouth and returned him to the water unharmed. He isn't stuck with a gaff in that picture. We ate mostly mangrove snapper, Spanish mackerel, shark, and sand perch. I'd say out of what we caught on this trip, I liked the Spanish mackerel the best. Probably my favorite saltwater fish is Vermillion Snapper. You usually catch them in deeper water than where we were fishing - quite often around a reef. |
