Big Turkey
I was on the phone with my sister yesterday when her husband came in from his hunting cabin with a 20 pound turkey, and this turkey had an eleven inch beard. This is his first turkey of the season he will probably get two more. He gets 6 to 8 deer every season.
EDIT: BTW my BIL is 77 years old. |

Mmmmmmmmm! Turrrrrrrrkey!
I thought about going on the spring turkey hunt, but the practical side of me said that I can buy a turkey at the grocery store for half the cost of a tank of gas to get to where I could hunt them....

Just out of curiosity, would a turkey like that stay nice and juicy in the freezer until Thanksgiving even if it was shot during this time of the year? We don't have any wild turkey over here, so I have never shot and frozen one myself.

I don't think there is anything as a "juicy turkey" but 7 months is a long time to keep meat frozen. I really couldn't tell you but judging by the way chicken meat reacts to long term freeze I would say no.

Erik, I think a wild turkey is about twice as juicy as commercially produced bird. And if you ever saw one of these "turkey farms," you'd likely never eat one again.
I suspect Aviator is right about bird not keeping all that well until T-giving. I wouldn't try it personally. All the "turks" I ever shot were eaten soon afterwards. Texas is blessed with a spring AND fall turkey season. Some states probably are not. |
