.308 battle packs & US Mil-Surp 7.62 NATO Tracer rounds
Stopped by the local gun shop this afternoon after work and found some .308 ammo on stripper clips, in battle packs. 5 rounds per stripper clip, 2 sets of 5 rounds per pouch, 5 pouches (total of 50 rounds), for $29 each. They have at least 10 battle packs in the display case for sale. Is this a good deal?
The ammo is 168 gr. FMJ, has brass cases and is Berdan primed (no idea where it was manufactured). Also found some Mil-Surp (US), 7.62 NATO tracer rounds (2 boxes of 20 rounds each), but I can't remember the price. |

Tracer rounds would be "handy" to have, for future use.
I have a link belt of 'em handy. Ya sure don't want to shoot 'em off in dry country though. The Battle Packs sound good, at today's prices $29.00 is a good buy. |

If you keep your eye on AIM Surplus, you can do better than 58 cents/round. But - a bird in the hand, so to speak.
Ditto on what Bears said about tracers. Quick way to start a brush/forest fire.

Well, I did buy 1 of the battle packs to try in my DPMS LR-308. I loaded 5 rounds in a magazine and gave 'em a try.
Every round fired ok but, I had to cycle the next round manually. I think it made the bolt carrier group short cycle. Once I slipped the mag into the rifle and released the BCG, it loaded the first round just fine. Took aim and fired. Empty case ejected but it didn't chamber the next round. I pulled the BCG back (while watching), and it picked up the next round and loaded it and fired with no problem. It did this with the rest of the rounds I had in the magazine. So evidently this ammo doesn't work well in my rifle. Guess I'll sell it to my brother to use in his .308 Contender. |

No sir, it does not (according to this anyways).
http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=4851 On a side note, it fires brass cased commercially manufactured .308 and 7.62 NATO rounds flawlessly. The .308 ammo in the battle pack does have brass cases. |
