No offense, but that engine was total shit.
The GM V6 that preceded it had 10 more horsepower than the 304 and got better gas mileage too. I have had AMC 304, 360 and 401. All shit.

Pogo that is frigging beautiful good job.
I bought a 1961 CJ5 and myself 'non mechanic' and the old vets hang here 'mechanics' are having fun cleaning it up and restoring it. Holy sheet I thought my Harley had expensive prices for parts till I got this jeep. $$$$ Picts. as soon as ptannjr or some computer whiz shows up shows me how to post em. AWT will pass through he can do it. |

Yes, it had adequate torque and horsepower, it was reliable and durable, it ran well and overall performed well.

Worse of all: The carb that AMC put in would flood out on a steep uphill offroad, allowing the driver the pleasure of rapidly rolling backwards down the steep hill with no power. I also found that once the AMC v8 decided to run rough, there was nothing that could be done. It would be rough forever. I know that guys like to buy old Jeeps and restore them with the original engine. However, I would just put a 383 chev or even 350 chev in there for much greater project satisfaction. All of the foregoing is IMO. |

Just curious, I think they are junk too. Nice built 350 chevy in a jeep is alot of power.
I put a 327 chevy, turbo400. with dana 20 transfer case in a '64 J300 jeep Gladiator truck. After I sold my CJ. You could get the adapters off a older full size jeep wagoneer because they had a GM turbo 400 trans in them I had a friend that had Amc 304 then a 360 then a 401 in his '77 CJ. He blew them all up, He was a crazy sob anyway. He rolled his jeep at least 3 times that I remember, everytime he was haulin' ass too. . |

I am sold on the somewhat greater low end torque with a 383. We have some real steep stuff here.
But these guys do it with the original 4 cylinder: https://youtu.be/fK3Q-VkCSsE?t=294 |

I am not afraid of height not afraid of death. But. The thought of being crushed to death as you roll down a mountain does not really interest me. What is the purpose of riding on that road? |

My 1964 J300 looked like this, . Mine had a original Tornado 6 cylinder when I bought it. Burnt a valve so the chevy sm blk turbo 400 was installed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Tornado_engine It had a Dana 44 front axle and a Dana "53" rear axle. The 64 truck had crappy steering too. I put a chevy camero power steering box and steering column in it and you used a little bit newer year Wagoner steering box adaptor that bolted directly to the frame to mount the sagnaw Camero steering box. All the original brakes were same as GM/chevy truck |

It was a fun truck. The body was well built and solid, the bed top, sides tailgate was real thick metal.
I bought the think on a whim because it had been sitting near my house for years and they put a 4 sale sign on it, and I had just sold my CJ. I thought it was ugly but it was 4x4 and had pretty new tire. IIRC I paid $900 for it |
