Haven't made Deer Chili in years since I moved from the old neighborhood. My old drinking buddy Burt use to drop off about ten pounds after his hunt.

Last year he got a deer with an HK91 and another with a Springfield 1903. This year with a Steyr. In the past he got lots with various AR15s. His brother is still using an AR15.
The AR15 is the most kid-friendly rifle there is. Just collapse the buttstock and there is no recoil. Much easier for them to use than a chopped down bolt gun. |

On that deer, the older boy was at 350 or 375 yards and the younger boy was at 294 yards. The older boy put 2 rounds in the deer but it ran laterally and did not drop. The younger boy put one round in the deer and it dropped. Ownership goes to the older boy since he put good rounds in first.
Distance to the nearest tire tracks was only 1000 yards or so. Distance from there to where the truck was parked was about 1.5 miles which I had to walk to get the truck. Total walking for the day was probably between 4 and 5 miles, which is not bad. I packed out the ass end of the deer plus boned out tenderoins and shoulders. That just leaves rib meat and scrawny neck meat behind. Also left the hoofs. The pack was 65 or so pounds, which caused my body to complain. But I was carrying it downhill. As far as I can tell from a topo map, that ridge is 7300 feet. |
