I don't recall hearing a whole lot about how the .45 Long Colt does against bears. Since my nephew is being sent to Alaska to work at some fairly remote sights, accessible only by helicopter, the most powerful caliber handgun he has is a Vaquero in .45 Colt.
Although, with the money he's been pulling down, and will be making, plus being single and living at home, he should be able to afford about anything he wants. Hell, he got his WuFlu money and took it and donated the whole thing to filling the freezers of some families he knew who didn't have much money to buy food. If I were driving to Alaska, I'd bring along a cheap pump shotgun with slugs, buckshot, and some bird shot. It is a lot easier to bring a shotgun into Kanadia than a handgun.
