Welcome to the site where the owners and members have had it with playing "nice" and being "inclusive" and "tolerant" of points of view that are destroying the fabric of what made this country great. The members here are sick and tired of politicians of all parties lying, deceiving, stealing, and pretending they are doing it all for the good of the country while selling out to special interests who have the set goal of destroying this country. We have had enough of career politicians who use their office only for personal gain, and who refuse to listen to the people who put them in office. The membership is no longer part of the silent majority who play nice and get along while getting screwed by anyone with a loud voice and an agenda. We will no longer allow anyone to piss down our back and tell us it's raining. And we like guns too.

Default This is how SSDs work and what you can do to make yours last longer

Traditional hard drives will be here for long time thanks to their large storage space and affordability. However, there is no question that solid-state drives (SSDs) will be the future of storage. Most new computers now come with an SSD as the main storage device. If you have an older (or a new budget-class) machine that still runs on a regular hard drive, it's definitely time to upgrade. (Here's some instructions on how to upgrade on a PC and a Mac.) The speed gains you'll experience from upgrading to an SSD will be by far the biggest performance improvement your computer ever has.

But is it all unicorns and lollipops with SSDs? Not quite. SSDs still fall short in a few places compared to normal hard drives, in particular regarding their write endurance. This means you can only write a finite amount of data to an SSD before you can't write anymore. In this post, I'll talk about this shortcoming and how to mitigate it. Most of my suggestions will be focused on Windows PCs.

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-ssds...ease-lifespan/

I found this as an interesting article. It may help those here that are not PC gurus to understand the difference between hard drives (we are blessed with some knowledgeable members here) and I learned a lot from the article.

I have two SSDs. One in my notebook and one in my external backup drive. I want one for my desktop but have been putting off buying one mainly because of the cost and the current hard drive is not that old. As with most I want more speed for my PC.

Reckon I'll start shopping.

I've had good luck with the Crucial brand of SSD. Also, if you basically use your SSD to hold your OS and installed programs only, and use a separate drive (whether mechanical or SSD) to hold any data you may be frequently erasing and rewriting...your OS drive should last a lifetime (or nearly so).

My laptop I bought last summer has the solid state hard drive.

works good. I doesnt have that cooling fan running all the time, and the PC never gets warm or hot

One thing about SSD's, do not defrag them. That takes a lot of life out of them and there is a possibility of bricking the drive.

This is a good article about the topic at hand. I cannot find the article about damage, though. In any event, there's no need to defrag them, anyhow.

Thanks Brian, now I'll only optimize instead of defragging.
Was wondering why it was so quick in the process, now I know.

Don't know what to do about cookies though.

Now, I thought the title referred to some erection prescription or something. "Make yours last longer".....at our age, yes tell me.

Dammit, it's about computers.

I was not aware of that, I bought my daughter a new convertible laptop from Dell with the SSD bit it has like 1T of space, I know she won't use that much, she keeps a lot of stuff in the school cloud.

Depending on what she puts in there, 1TB can get used up surprisingly quick with the size of today's picture files and 4K videos from even cell phones, GoPro action cameras etc.

Exactly. Depending how you use the computer, a TB is just a good start.

I have a personal 4T cloud drive in my network, two desktops with 1T each plus an additional 1T external drive on each, then her laptop for school work where she can access the 4T drive from anywhere she is. I have plenty of home made movies and zillions of pictures in that 4T drive and I'm just using a small fraction of it.

I bought an inexpensive hybrid drive for a laptop that crapped out but I can't find a cable to connect my old one to in order to copy it...? It' a usb-to-usb cable. Each end male. Can not find one at all. Wtf.

I thought the same Fred.
RTO next time yah come down here I have a bunch of questions on this computer for you to show me how to?
Lenovo G70 laptop with Century Link feeding it. Guy in the store told me this one was lightning fast and he was not kidding. $70 a month for the Century Link and I just hit the key and the next request appears.
