Questoin for guys who have fished the saltwater flats in Florida and the Gulf
I'm thinking a 7 foot medium fast action rod and a spinning reel with around 250 yards 12 lb line would be my main tool.
I've also got some heavier stuff and some lighter stuff to take. What has your experience been for bonefish, reds, cobia, permit, etc?

If you want some heavier rods stop by on the way down, take the Bird Road exit from the Turnpike and I'm 5 minutes away.
12 pound line will do around here unless you hook a hammerhead.

I've got some real heavy rods, but I know they aren't for fishing the flats. They are for offshore fishing or for trolling.
I've been watching several fishing shows of the Florida flats. It looks like most of them are using 7' or even 8' rods, and what appears to be about 12 lb - 15 lb line. I was looking at getting this rod: http://www.americananglinggearguide....ikerss764.html and this reel http://www.cabelas.com/p-0017215316449a.shtml You can get the combination for a fairly decent price: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...equestid=10881 I need an excuse to get a new rod anyway. Hey, my wife bought another pair of shoes last week because she claimed she "needed" them. |

Just remember if you hook a hammerhead, it more than likey won't be over 2 to 3 feet long. Don't try to remove the hook by hand, cut it out with a sharp knife and throw it back the others will take care of it in short order. You need a really sharp stout knife.

I fished in Florida one time off a pier in inter coastal watter at the Hotel i was staying......I stayed up until 4:00 AM fishing one night with 2 little zebco cheap rod & reels.....I was using live shrimp for bait and i would just cast out the lines as far as i could and then sit there and wait.
Some damn thing grabbed on to one of my lines and as i grabbed the rod what ever it was took off ripping out all the line in the reel with it before the line ran out and snapped..I had the drag set pretty strong too.........It was 10 lb. test I often wondered if it was a shark or a very big stingray.
