19 things to know about hummingbirds
Hummingbird season is here in Middle Tennessee as the tiny birds make their way south.
Here are some fun facts about hummingbirds: • Hummingbirds are the smallest birds on earth. • They cannot walk, but they are the only bird that can fly backward and go from perching to full speed in an instant. • Hummingbird nests are about the size of an English walnut. • The ruby-throated hummingbird weighs about one-tenth of an ounce, is about 3½ inches long and can travel more than 600 miles in migration. https://www.tennessean.com/story/lif...ow/1052657002/

• To estimate the number of hummingbirds in your yard at one time during fall migration, take the number of birds you can see at one time and multiply it by five.

Their tongues are good steamed
They taste sweet, but it takes a lot to make a meal... |

Never had the tongues, but hummingbird breasts on a toothpick marinated in Italian dressing and grilled over a charcoal briquette are delicious.

I had one buzz the front door few days ago. I figured he was eyeballing the decoration the wife hung on the front door. It has a lot of red in it.
So... I went out and got a couple feeders. My daughter hooked me up with a sugar water recipe for nectar. Just waiting to see if any show up now. The little bastards better show up for all the trouble I went thru to hang feeders...

I am going to hang a bird feeder up soon. Right where the cats can watch the birds coming and going through the patio doors. It will be like TV for them.

You need really small shot to hit them on the wing.

We used to have quite a few hummers here around the house in the warm months. The wife & I planted different kinds of flowering plants to attract them 5 or 6 years ago & it worked. Last summer for some reason though we spotted only a few of the little fellas. Don't know why.
